Making Friends in Business: Easy Networking Tips

Making connections through business networking is about more than just exchanging contact details; it’s about building genuine relationships. It’s possible that by being authentic, offering value, and staying consistent, as part as your networking strategies, you can turn professional connections into meaningful friendships.

Looking back, it was common to see a multitude of friendships (even romantic relationships) develop through our working environment.  The traditional 9-5 has always been a common place for many of us to start and build friendships, so why shouldn’t business networking be the same?  You may not spend hours with the same people every single day as you would in the 9-5 grind, but be open to the possibilities that professional networking can provide toward meeting people that may become significant in your life.

And remember, the benefits of networking are many.  It is a long-term investment in your personal and professional growth, and with the right approach, you can create a supportive and enriching network of friends and colleagues.

However, turning up at a business networking event for the first time, and not knowing anyone can be daunting, so here’s some points to consider when first getting into the world of professional networking:

  • UNDERSTAND NETWORKING ETIQUETTE

Creating a good first impression, and one that will last, will go a long way to helping you build meaningful relationships, so start with a networking strategy that can support you to navigate networking events and conversations with professionalism and respect.

Prepare in Advance

Preparation is key to making the most out of networking events. Before attending, research the event, the key participants, and the organisation hosting it. Prepare a brief and engaging introduction or pitch that easily explains your business offering. (Discover more about pitches here).

Dress Appropriately

Your appearance can make a strong first impression. Dress appropriately for the event and industry. Your attire should convey professionalism while also making you feel comfortable and confident.

Be Punctual

Arriving on time demonstrates respect for the organisers and fellow attendees. It also gives you the opportunity to settle in, review the event agenda, and gives you more time for networking. Being punctual can set a positive tone for your interactions throughout the event.

Respect Different Perspectives

Networking events often bring together people from diverse backgrounds and industries. Approach each conversation with an open mind and respect differing viewpoints. Embracing diversity in your network can provide valuable insights and opportunities you might not have considered.

  • LOOK TO BUILD GENUINE RELATIONSHIPS

So, if you want to build more than a simple connection that leads to something other than a brief acknowledgment at the next meeting, there are few things you can implement into your networking strategy that may support you towards a deeper connection:

Be Authentic

Many people at networking events can be quite ‘seasoned networkers’, meaning, that they meet lots of people and can tell if you are trying to fit a certain mold or wanting to impress. But our advice is, don’t be afraid to be yourself.   People are more likely to connect with you if they feel you are sincere and approachable.

Listen Actively

Especially if you’re nervous at a networking event, you might find yourself talking a lot about you and your business. But remember, it’s equally (if not more) important to listen to others. Practice active listening by giving them your full attention, asking thoughtful questions and showing genuine interest in what others have to say.

Find Common Ground

Identify shared interests or experiences to build rapport. Whether it’s a common hobby, a mutual acquaintance, or similar professional goals, finding common ground helps establish a connection. This can make interactions more enjoyable and memorable. Remember too that a positive attitude is contagious and can help you establish a stronger connection.

  • FOLLOWING UP & STAYING IN TOUCH

Follow-Up Thoughtfully

After any networking event, follow up with the people you meet. A personalised email or message referencing something specific from your conversation can strengthen the connection. Be prompt in your follow-up and express genuine appreciation for the opportunity to connect. This step is crucial in transitioning from a brief encounter to a lasting relationship.

Offer Value

One of the best ways to encourage friendships in business networking, is to offer value without expecting anything in return. Share useful information, introduce people who might benefit from each other’s services, or offer assistance with a challenge they’re facing. Being generous and supporting others is a great way to strengthen relationships.

Be Consistent

Building lasting friendships requires consistent effort. Stay in touch with your network by checking-in, sharing relevant updates, and engage with them on social media. Consistency helps keep you on their radar and demonstrates that you’re invested in building a relationship.

Be Supportive and Encouraging

Take an interest in what your new connections are doing and support them when you can. Being supportive helps build trust and loyalty and opens the door for a two-way support system.  Always be grateful for support from others too.

Attend Events Regularly

Make it a habit to attend networking events regularly, and be visible either online of face-to-face. Regular participation increases your visibility and provides more opportunities to meet new people and strengthen existing connections. Consider too, that networking doesn’t always have to be formal. Engage in social activities where you can interact with others in a more relaxed setting.  Over time, frequent interactions can help transform acquaintances into friends.
