The WA economy since 2014 and what to expect

WA Economy since the end of the mining investment boom in 2014 has been operating at below trend rates of growth. Lacklustre household consumption, which accounts for around 50% of state final demand has been a weak link.

– Why has the WA economy been so weak since 2014?

• From annual growth averaging over 5.5% between 2001 and 2013, the economy has been growing at an anaemic annual rate of around 1.25%.

Dominic Regan graduated from Murdoch University with a first-class honours and was recruited by the Commonwealth Treasury for its graduate program. He spent 12 years analysing and forecasting the Australian and international economies. Highly technically skilled in data analysis, econometrics and forecasting, Dominic contributed economic forecasts and analysis in every Budget and MYEFO publication during his time at Treasury. He worked closely with the senior executive on three Intergenerational Reports looking at the impact of population ageing on the economy. He worked in Macroeconomic Modelling Division and was integral in the production of the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme. Dominic is fascinated by the economy and economic data because at its heart it is about people, their behaviour and wellbeing. He is particularly interested in demographics, labour markets and the drivers of productivity growth. He has two authored papers published in the Treasury Economic Roundup and contributed to many unauthored papers and publications.

Dominic spent time as the Industry Economist for AUSVEG, the Australian vegetable grower’s association in Melbourne before returning to WA for a 12 month stint with the WA Treasury.

Dominic is currently operating his own economic consulting service, RSquared Economics.
